A Skill That Changes Everything
For many women in rural Bangladesh, the barrier to earning an income is not effort or willingness — it is opportunity. Without training, tools, or a place to begin, even the most determined mother can find every door closed. CSSD’s women empowerment program exists to open that first door.
It begins with a promise that is simple but powerful: learn a real skill, and you will not be left to face the market alone. From the first lesson to the first sale, participants are supported every step of the way.
Women build practical, market-ready tailoring skills together in a CSSD training class.
From First Stitch to First Sale
The journey starts with training. Over several weeks, participants learn to measure and cut fabric, operate a machine with confidence, finish a garment neatly, and price their work fairly. They practise on shared machines, encouraged by trainers and by one another, until sewing becomes second nature.
But training alone is not enough. A woman who has learned to sew still cannot earn if she has no machine of her own. That is why the program does not end in the classroom — it ends with a sewing machine placed directly into her hands.
The moment a participant receives her own sewing machine — the start of a home-based livelihood.
What One Sewing Machine Makes Possible
A sewing machine is a small piece of equipment with an outsized impact. With one of her own, a trained woman can:
- Take in tailoring and repair work from her own neighbours
- Stitch school uniforms, blouses, and everyday clothing to sell
- Earn a steady income from home, around the needs of her children
- Begin to save for the future instead of borrowing to survive
A single machine costs less than many families overseas spend on one weekend — yet in a village in Khulna, it can support a household for years.
The Ripple Effect of One Success
When a woman earns, her whole family rises with her. Children stay in school. Meals become more regular. Small savings grow into small businesses. And often, the first thing a successful participant does is teach a neighbour what she has learned — turning one sewing machine into a chain of quiet, community-led change.
You Can Put a Machine in Her Hands
Behind every sewing machine is a supporter who believed a woman’s skill was worth investing in. Your generosity can fund training, provide a machine, and help another mother in Bangladesh move from dependence to dignity.
